Second seeded Yuki Bhambri got off to a
tough start as he tamed his
doubles partner Michael Venus of New Zealand 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the
first round of the Asia-Oceania Australian Open wild card play-off at
the Luohu Tennis Centre, Shenzen, China, on Wednesday.
After losing the first set in a hurry, the 204th ranked Yuki broke his
opponent twice each in the next two sets to cruise through to the
quarterfinals.
‘’It was one of the best matches that I have played this year.
Hopefully, I will be able to keep up my level of play’’, observed
Yuki, when contacted by The Hindu.
‘’It is tough to play someone like Michael because he has a big game.
He hits his forehand very hard and has a good serve. Once the match
progressed, I got used to the pace and was able to move him around. I
was able to take charge of the rallies, and put pressure on his
serves’’, said Yuki.
The 21-year-old Yuki will await the winner of the match between
qualifier Zhicheng Zhu and wild card Miao-Xin Gong scheduled for
Thursday.
The main contender for the Australian Open wild card, top-seeded Jimmy
Wang of Chiense Taipei outplayed Ouyang Bowen of China 6-4, 6-1 to set
up a quarterfinal against compatriot Zhao Cai.
Meanwhile, Ankita Raina bowed out in the women’s first round after
finding the rhythm in the second set. The best-ranked Indian woman on
the WTA computer at 293, the 20-year-old Ankita was beaten 6-2, 2-6,
6-1 by the 18-year-old wild card Zhaoxuan Yang of China who had won
her maiden ITF women’s title in Delhi two years back.
‘’It was really a good chance that I missed’’, rued Ankita who was
unable settle into her best rhythm in the match that was marred by
rain interruptions.
Wild card Prarthana Thombare had no answers as she was outplayed 6-1,
6-0 by Chin-Wei Chan of Chinese Taipei.
In the doubles final qualifying round, after a bye, Ankita Raina and
Prarthana Thombare were overwhelmed 6-0, 6-3 by the fourth-seeded
Qiuyu Ye and Wushuang Zheng of China.
